FLUTE COMPETITION, PICCOLO COMPETITION and YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION RULES 2009

All competitiors are required to register for the main Festival

Entries for competitions close on September 1, 2009

4 competitors will be selected for Round Two (final).

Previous competition winners are entitled to enter.

Rule 1

  • The Flute Competition and the Piccolo Competition are both open to all nationalities aged 32 years and under as at October 2nd, 2009
  • The Young Artist Competition is open to all nationalities aged 19 and under as at Friday October 2nd 2009
  • The Ensemble Competition and the Flute Choir Competition are open to flautists of all ages

Rule 2
There will be two rounds of adjudication.

  • Round One (Semi-final) will be held on Friday October 2nd, 2009 at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide
  • Round Two (Final) will be held during the proceedings of the Australian Flute Festival October 3 - 5, 2009 at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide

Rule 3
The order of performance will be decided by the Committee.

Rule 4
The application must be received by Tuesday, September 1st, 2009.

Rule 5
The application must include the following:

  • A brief Curriculum Vitae and short biography of the competitor (in the case of the Flute Ensemble and the Flute Choir competitors, a short biography of the group is sufficient)
  • A recent photograph of the competitor (in the case of the Flute Ensemble and the Flute Choir, a group photograph is required)
  • Application fee
  • Exact details of repertoire to be played in Round One and Round Two. Competitors will be bound by their original selections

Rule 6
The application fee is non-refundable.

Rule 7
The AFF Competition Committee reserves the right to make changes to the competition.

Rule 8
The AFF Competition Committee may not hear the complete program in Round One.

Rule 9
The decision of the jury is final.

Rule 10
A competitor who fails to be on time for Round One and/or Round Two will be disqualified.

Rule 11
The Competition Judging Panels will be appointed by the Artistic Director.

Rule 12
Four finalists will be notified after Round One is completed on Friday October 2nd, 2009

Rule 13
Competitors are responsible for their own travel and accomodation expenses.

Rule 14
An accompanist will be provided for the four finalists for the Flute, Young Artist and Piccolo Competitions. A timetable will be available for rehearsal on the day of the Final.

Rule 15
Flute Ensemble Competition – groups will consist of between 4 and 6 players. Any combination of flutes is acceptable, however doubling of parts is not accepted.

Rule 16
Flute Choir Competition – groups will consist of 7 players and above. Doubling is permissible on any part. The choir must contain piccolo, C flutes and alto and/or bass. If the repertoire includes percussion, these instruments must be played by members within the group.

First Prize: Burkart Professional Piccolo, with split-e and modified wave style headjoint.
Value $7,500

Barry Pease, marketing manager for Burkart, will bring the instrument over personally, and work with the prize winner to select a headjoint of their choosing out of the Burkart selection.
