Earlybird 1 Registration is now open until August 31 by lyndie on Jun 25 2009

3 Months to go till the Festival

Over 200 people registered so far

Most of you will have booked your flights and accommodation by now. For those of you who are still thinking about coming, here is what the artists themselves have to say -

Margaret Crawford - Professional Learning Day

‘I well remember the excitement in the air at the Teachers' Day at the
Melbourne Flute Festival in 2002 and the tremendous response from those who
attended the varied and fascinating classes and lectures especially geared
towards flute teaching, which were presented on the first day. Very much
part of the Festival this day gave a deeper focus to the whole event. I am
sure that the Professional Learning Day at the 2009 Australian Flute
Festival will provide the same experience and I cannot recommend highly
enough that anyone interested in teaching the flute should attend’.

Numbers registered for the Professional Learning Day so far, are close to 50. Margaret Crawford has just returned from a 2 week teaching stint at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. They were so impressed with her there, that 16 students from Hong Kong are now planning on attending the Festival. Margaret is a revered educator who has inspired and guided many Australian flutists over the last 50 years.

Bridget Douglas - Masterclass and Recital

"I am really looking forward to being a part of the 2009 Australian Flute
Festival - what a wonderful opportunity to hear the gorgeous flute playing
of Jean Ferrandis and Tara-Helen O'Connor as well being inspired by
colleagues closer to home in masterclasses and recitals. Living 'down-under'
you have to jump at these precious opportunities to get together and
celebrate all things flute".

Bridget Douglas is Principal Flute of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Sally Walker - Masterclass and Recital
Sally recently made the trip to Adelaide to rehearse with the other members of her ensemble - such is the commitment of our artists, 3 months out!

"I have just come back from a day trip to lovely Adelaide to have a
provisional rehearsal of Vivaldi's A minor Sonata RV 86  with Harpsichordist
(Glenys March) and Bassoonist (Mark Gaydon) which we will be performing at
the festival.  I was reminded of what a friendly atmosphere Adelaide has;
and flew in early especially to visit the ever-enticing Central markets
which I re-discovered like a homing pigeon.  I then did what any
self-respecting flute player would do: spent an exorbitant amount of money
on old french cheeses...!  I later placed a petit chevre on both of my
chamber musicians stands at the beginning of the rehearsal to bribe them
to agree with my tempi (MAY be a little on the brisk side.... so some
leverage was not in vain).  After the uplifting harmonies and some decidedly
dangerous technical passages, I flew back to Sydney with a heavier bag, a
smile and a promise to myself to leave my credit card at home when visiting
the markets during the Festival.  Should I be late for my recital, you shall
know where I will be."

Sally Walker is the Lecturer in Flute at Newcastle Conservatorium of Music.
